A stray cat with an injured eye was safely rescued by New Jersey State Police troopers on a busy highway in Newark earlier this week.

The cat was “hunkered down” on the Route 280 median with no way to escape as traffic sped by, the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge said in a Facebook post .

According to State Police, troopers responded to milepost 13 shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, and they located the injured black cat on the left shoulder of the highway.

The cat was first transported to Paterson Animal Control and then brought to the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge for immediate medical care, where he was named Conan.

“Conan was welcomed with open arms by our cattery,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “Incredibly, he escaped with only a painful laceration over his eye.”
