ATLANTA — After a day of deliberations , a Fulton County jury has reached a verdict following the trial of a man accused of killing a Fulton County deputy in 2022. Alton Oliver was found not guilty on all charges.
Oliver was accused of shooting and killing Deputy James Thomas in December 2022. Thomas was found shot and killed in the driver's seat of a crashed vehicle around 4:30 a.m. on Bolton Road in the Riverside neighborhood.
On Wednesday, Oliver took the stand and told jurors , he shot Thomas out of fear after the deputy allegedly drove by him multiple times, making unwanted sexual advances. Oliver said that after Thomas’ second pass, he returned — this time speeding toward him.
The jury verdict reads:
Count 1 - Murder: Not Guilty
Count 2 - Murder: Not Guilty
Count 3 - Murder
