It’s been 20 years since Volbeat released its first album, and the Danish group can look back at an eventful career so far.
The troupe was founded during 2001 in Copenhagen, after singer-guitarist Michael Poulsen broke up his death metal band Dominus. He brought in drummer Jon Larsen, a veteran of other metal bands in the area, and took the new band name from “Vol.Beat,” the title of the third Dominus album. Poulsen and Larsen have remained constants since, with other members — including former Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano until 2023 — moving through the lineup.
Volbeat has released nine albums overall, hitting the Top 10 in the U.S. with 2013’s “Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies” and 2016’s “Seal the Deal & Let’s Boogie.” It’s also topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart with sons su
