A 47-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly yelled racial abuse at a player during an English Premier League soccer game.
The alleged incident occurred at Anfield during Liverpool’s season-opening 4-2 win against Bournemouth.
The game was briefly stopped in the first half as referee Anthony Taylor went to report a complaint made by the Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, a Black winger from Ghana.
Merseyside police said the man was arrested on a racially aggravated public order offense.
“Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form,” said Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton. “We take incidents like this very seriously, and in cases like this we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible.”
