CINCINNATI (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER) -Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter Bernice King helped Cincinnati officials break ground Aug. 14 at the site of a new memorial for the civil rights leader in Avondale after eight years of extensive planning .

The $1.4 million memorial is set to replace an earlier monument of King at the corner of Reading Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. That monument, dedicated in 1987, was moved to MLK Park in North Avondale in 2017 to accommodate road construction.

The city has been considering building a King memorial with an initiative for a new statute started by then-Councilman Chris Smitherman for years, according to Cincinnati City Manager Sheryl Long’s office.
