BRAINERD — Glen Burkhalter had never worked in the restaurant industry before he opened The Spot 371 — but he had a vision.
The quaint business is filled with personality, with unique decorations and a retro theme. It serves breakfast, lunch, ice cream and coffee while also selling gifts and candy.
“I always wanted to do something like this,” Burkhalter said. “My grandma had a little cafe … so that’s what I remember growing up.”
Throughout the restaurant and gift shop, several antique bicycles perch on walls and windowsills, retro signs indicate the candy and toy sections, and colorful decor emulates the feeling of a 1950s diner. Near the cash register, a boat hangs from the ceiling.
Burkhalter collects items that feel reminiscent of the 1940s and '50s, like tricycles, scooters and gum
