The University of British Columbia has dropped slightly in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities, while the University of Victoria held steady in the global standings.

The 2025 rankings, released by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, placed UBC at 53rd worldwide and second in Canada, behind only the University of Toronto, which ranked 25th globally. That’s a slight dip for UBC, which placed 52nd last year.

UVic, meanwhile, continues to sit in the 301-400 range globally, and 11th to 15th among Canadian universities — unchanged from 2024.

UVic was recognized for its reputation of “commitment to research, scholarship and co-op education,” as well as its interdisciplinary and international initiatives and diverse learning community.
