Given even more of an opportunity because of Brendan Sullivan’s injury, recently arrived quarterback Jake Retzlaff took another step forward in Tulane’s second and final preseason scrimmage on Saturday at Yulman Stadium.

So did the highly regarded defense, which rebounded from a sluggish start in scrimmage No. 1 to dominate the first two series when all of the starters were playing.

The action began at 11 a.m. under the hot August sun—the same time as kickoff for the season opener against Northwestern on Aug. 30—and linebacker Sam Howard nailed running back Maurice Turner for a 4-yard loss on the opening play. That Retzlaff-led series ended in a three-and-out, as did the second drive when the American Conference officials ruled Kadin Semonza down by sack on back-to-back plays.
