Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler was placed on the 15-day injured list with a blood clot near his right shoulder.

In a statement Saturday, the Phillies described the injury as a right upper extremity blood clot. The timetable for his return is unclear.

Wheeler, 35, heads up the strongest starting pitching staff in MLB with a 2.71 ERA and a league-leading 195 strikeouts.

The Phillies are 70-53 with a 5.5 game lead over the New York Mets in the National League East.
