SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. — Saturday afternoon, the community filled the walkway along South Haven Harbor to honor veterans.

The 13th annual Salute to Veterans kicked off at noon with a boat parade and a flyover.

Organizers said the event was inspired more than 40 years ago when a local disabled veteran with the South Haven Steelheaders took a group of disabled veterans on a Lake Michigan fishing trip.

Now, Operation Injured Soldiers, South Haven Steelheaders, boat captains and other volunteers have grown the event into what it is today, with the boat parade showing patriotism and gratitude to our veterans.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's marine patrol unit, the Motor Lifeboat 36460, more than 30 fishing boats and others paraded through the harbor.
