MISSOULA — The Montana football team will be hoping there is safety in numbers at the back end of its defense this season.
The Grizzlies brought in five transfer safeties this past offseason, two of whom have starting experience on defense. That's the second-most additions in any position group on either side of the ball, behind only the defensive line.
They took that route after losing all three starters and five of the six regulars on the two-deep. They returned six players, just four of whom have appeared in a game and only one who has had substantial game reps on defense.
Yet, the group has optimism.
