The Philadelphia Phillies placed three-time All-Star pitcher Zach Wheeler on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a blood clot located near his right shoulder.
The news came from Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski less than 24 hours after Wheeler allowed two runs on four hits over five innings in Friday’s 6-2 win over the Nationals.
“There’s not a whole lot we can say on it at this time,” Dombrowski said after Saturday’s game. “But I commend (the medical staff) for finding this because it could’ve been a much more trying situation than what it is.”
Wheeler has been an All-Star in back-to-back campaigns. In six seasons with the Phillies, the right-hander has posted a 69-37 record with a 2.91 ERA and 1,094 strikeouts to 220 walks over 979 innings.
This season, he
