TRAVERSE CITY, MI — Bradford James Gille, the man accused of stabbing 11 people in a Traverse City Walmart on Saturday, July 26, was in court for a competency hearing on Aug. 15, 2025.

Grand Traverse County Judge Robert Cooney was acting judge for the hearing, and said it was required for the competency hearing to be held within five days of receiving the report. Gille's competency report was dated Aug. 12, Cooney said.

He said he would rather adjourn the hearing, allowing Judge Michael Stepka, who was assigned the case, the be the one hearing testimony. Stepka was unavailable during the hearing, which is why Cooney stepped in.

Cooney said that while they could conduct the hearing, he thought it would be more beneficial to wait for when Stepke is available so he could ask any questions
