Hurricane Erin weakened to a Category 3 hurricane overnight, but still remains a formidable major hurricane. Erin had max winds of 125 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in a 5 a.m. ET update. The next update is expected at 8 a.m. ET. The weakening is seen as only temporary, as Erin is expected to re-intensify after completing an eyewall replacement cycle. These are natural cycles that normally weaken a hurricane by a bit, but re-intensification is normal once the cycle is completed. As of the latest update, Erin is located about 140 miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico , or about 330 miles east-south-east of Grand Turk Island. It's moving west-north-west at 14 mph.
