Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says violent crimes in the city are at its lowest rate in 60 years because of support from President Donald Trump.
Duggan, who is running as an independent to become the state’s next governor, touted the decline of crime during a brief appearance Saturday, Aug. 16, on Smerconish – a CNN podcast.
“The federal government has been a huge part in this,” Duggan told host Michael Smerconish.
Duggan pointed to the success coming from Trump’s appointment of Jerome Gorgan to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.
The Detroit mayor said prior to him being elected in 2014, the city averaged about 700 carjackings a year. That number for all of 2025 is 45, Duggan said.
