A wildfire northwest of Nanaimo, British Columbia, that prompted evacuations is now under control. The B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) reported significant progress on the Wesley Ridge wildfire, located on the north banks of Cameron Lake, about 50 kilometers northwest of Nanaimo. Firefighters continue to patrol the area and extinguish remaining hot spots.

The Wesley Ridge fire burned nearly six square kilometers of land and was previously classified as being held. At its peak, nearly 400 properties were under evacuation order, with hundreds more on evacuation alert, requiring residents to be prepared to leave at a moment's notice. The fire forced hundreds to evacuate during the first week of August.

As of Sunday morning, 75 wildfires are active in British Columbia, with four classified as out of control. One of these is the Mount Underwood fire, located just south of Port Alberni. This fire has expanded rapidly since it was first detected last Monday and currently covers an area of 36 square kilometers, approximately eight kilometers south of Port Alberni.

The Mount Underwood fire has caused concern in the community, but officials reported that it received over 30 millimeters of rain on Friday, which has helped reduce fire activity. Evacuation orders and alerts remain in effect, including for the China Creek campground and parts of the Cameron Heights neighborhood in Port Alberni.

The fire has also disrupted access to the remote community of Bamfield and caused power outages for 500 B.C. Hydro customers. The utility has begun restoration efforts, but full repairs may take up to two weeks. This work includes replacing 56 power poles and 70 spans of power line, totaling about 20 kilometers.
