DETROIT, MI – State police are investigating a head-on crash that later caused a multi-vehicle pileup.

The Detroit Regional Communications Center started receiving 911 calls around 1:20 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, regarding a driver heading the wrong way on M-10 near Grand River Avenue.

Police said a 27-year-old Detroit man was driving a Chevy Impala northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway and struck a Nissan head-on.

Some of the Nissan’s passengers – police did not say how many – suffered serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment.

Police said the initial crash then led to several secondary crashes with a total of five vehicles involved. It’s unclear if any other injuries were reported.
