A child has died following an incident in the water at a Cornwall beauty spot.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that an 11-year-old girl, from the South Devon area, had to be rescued from the water at Wacker Quay at Antony in Torpoint .

The incident happened at around 6pm on Saturday 16 August, and prompted a widespread response from emergency services.

The child was given emergency treatment but died at the scene.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Her next of kin have been informed and will be supported by specialist officers.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Wacker Quay forms part of the Tamar Valley landscape and provides free public access to the River Lynher.
