NORTH CANTON, Ohio - It's not every day that police are called to wrangle a tortoise, but that's exactly what happened when a large, shelled wanderer was discovered on North Canton’s city streets.
Officers with the North Canton Police Department were called Thursday morning to investigate a report of a loose tortoise near the intersection of Church and Donner Avenue SW. Officers found the animal wandering through yards and into the roadway.
No high-speed chase was required, but an officer put on a pair of gloves to capture the tortoise and take it to the nearby Community Gardens for temporary shelter.
The large terrapin, which experts note is not native to northeast Ohio, was then transferred to the Stark County Park District.
