The Hamtramck community is scrambling to find a solution for a noted cultural mural at the heart of the city now in danger of being built over.
The mural, unofficially called the "Yemen Mural," is on Jos. Campau Avenue on the side of the Yemeni restaurant Sheeba. It depicts Socotra, a Yemeni island in the Arabian Sea known for its unique geography and the endemic dragon blood tree. The piece also has several references to Islamic art and architecture.
The project spanned two years and was painted by Dasic Fernández, a Chilean street artist based in New York, costing around $20,000. The goal was to represent Hamtramck's growing Yemeni population and cultural diversity at a time of extreme marginalization, said Bill Meyer, former executive director of OneHamtramck, the organization that c
