The investigation into a fatal alley shooting in South L.A. has led detectives to believe it stemmed from an attempted carjacking and that some of the gunfire that erupted may have been returned in self-defense.

Deputies had originally been called to the 8000 block of South Hooper Avenue, located off Nadeau Avenue in the Florence-Graham neighborhood, around 9:20 p.m. on Saturday on reports of a gunshot victim.

“Upon arrival, deputies located two male victims in an alley to the west of the reported location,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a media release. “The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and pronounced one of the victims deceased on scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital suffering from gunshot wounds to his leg.”
