Former FBI Director James Comey has gained attention for a recent video in which he discusses his admiration for pop star Taylor Swift. In the video, released on Sunday, Comey describes how Swift's music has served as a soundtrack for his family and offers life lessons on dealing with adversity and bullies.
Comey, who identifies as a "Swiftie," revealed that he has attended two of Swift's concerts and even assisted family members in purchasing tickets. He shared that he often listens to her music while mowing the lawn. "I’m in a family’s Swiftie group chat. I know all her music and I listen to it in my headphones when I cut the grass," he said. His favorite songs include the 10-minute version of "All Too Well" and "Exile" featuring Bon Iver.
In the video, Comey also took the opportunity to criticize former President Donald Trump, stating that he believes Trump has humiliated America alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin. He described the situation as "a bad dream you can’t wake up from."
Comey emphasized that Swift's example helps him resist bullies without resorting to their tactics. He acknowledged the humor in satirical posts about Trump but expressed concern about the potential for such behavior to mirror the actions of Trump and his supporters. "There are far more decent, honest, kind people in America than there are mean jerks," he said, while also noting that the Republican Party exhibits a "stunning coarseness."
He further elaborated on Swift's influence, stating, "Taylor Swift has grown up with my family and provided us a soundtrack, really, as we've grown ourselves and learned and adapted and dealt with adversity and celebration." He believes that many families share a similar connection to her music.
Comey quoted Swift's lyrics from her song "Mean," reflecting on the message of overcoming negativity. "I bet you got pushed around. Somebody made you cold. But the cycle ends right now, because you can’t leave me down that road," he recited. He concluded by stating that while people cannot stop others from being unkind, they can control how it affects them.
The video has gone viral, with mixed reactions from viewers. Some have called it "the creepiest video in the history of social media," while others expressed disbelief that Comey once served as FBI director. This is not the first time Comey has stirred controversy; he has previously faced backlash for various social media posts.
