After an unsuccessful stint with Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs a veteran defenseman is eyeing a return to the NHL. Following an almost career-ending injury, it’s now redemption what’s at stake for the former Buds’ player.

Jani Hakanpaa played in just two NHL games with Matthews and the Leafs during the 2024-25 season. Mainly because of a knee injury that threatened to cut his playing career short.

However, the Finnish defenseman is now on the outside looking in and reports suggest several sides have shown interest in the 33-year-old. The blueliner had joined the Maple Leafs on a one-year, $1.47 million contract, but appeared in just two outings, failing to register any points.
