Razia Jan, an Afghan activist who advocated for girls' right to learn, died last month. She was 81.
Jan died on July 20 at her home in Los Angeles, according to The New York Times . Her cause of death was congestive heart failure.

Jan watched the Sept. 11 attacks unfold from her dry cleaning and tailoring shop in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and felt called to help in some way. She stitched quilts with portraits of fallen first responders, made blankets for Ground Zero workers, and sent care packages to troops in Afghanistan.
