A historic coastal Douglas fir tree known as the Doerner fir, which is believed to be 450 years old and is 325 feet tall, was burning in a fire east of Coquille on Aug. 17, according to the Coos Forest Protective Association.

Firefighters are attempting to extinguish the single tree fire, which is burning from the top of the tree to the trunk, a news release said.

Personnel are considering aerial resources to extinguish the fire and preserve the historical tree, a release from the Coos Forest Protective Association said.

Formerly known as the Brummit fir, the Doerner fir stands over 325-feet tall and has a 11.5-foot diameter. It’s one of the tallest non-redwood trees in the world.
