The 34-year-old suspect in the Aug. 8 Chinatown acid attack that sent a man to the hospital in critical condition turned himself into police today.
Marquis Johnson surrendered at 5:35 p.m. at the Honolulu Police Department’s main station on South Beretania Street, police said in a social media post. Detectives from HPD’s Strategic Enforcement Detail took Johnson into custody and arrested him for suspicion of first-degree assault.
“Charges will be reviewed and filed with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney,” HPD said in the post.
On Wednesday, HPD Homicide Lt. Deena Thoemmes said although the suspect was wanted for first-degree assault, the charge could be upgraded to attempted murder depending on what police find during their investigation.
