On Gladys: “I think she’s a very misunderstood woman! For lack of a better term, I am the bad guy in the movie, but a girl’s just doing what she has to do to get through. She has a plan, but I don’t think she quite knew how that was going to unfold. She’s like an artist, she’s very extemporaneous.”

On inspiration: “[Director] Zach [Cregger]’s a big Diane Arbus fan and so am I. We looked at some of Diane’s work about a disintegrating woman, then I also thought about Bette Davis playing Baby Jane.”

On success: “Opportunities [as an older actress] are less and you just hope that something finds you so you can find it. And I don’t take it for granted, because you can go up and then you can go all the way down, as we know.”
