The passage of this year’s federal budget bill, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025 (OBBBA), has raised concerns that some rural and independent hospitals would have to shutter.

A Senate-commissioned analysis of rural hospital stability in June stated that six Colorado hospitals were in danger of closure under the new rules, including Delta Health Hospital and Grand River Hospital in Rifle.

However, both hospitals’ chief executive officers stated there is no such risk.

A STURDY START, HOPEFUL OUTLOOK

According to Grand River Hospital District Chief Executive Officer Jim Coombs, the hospital is the most fiscally sound it has been in over a decade.

A testament to that solvency is the hospital’s days of cash on hand, which Coombs said is just over 180 days.
