There’s a running joke in Friday’s propulsively sexy murder mystery “Honey Don’t!” about Margaret Qualley’s California private detective Honey O’Donahue.
Whenever Honey strides in — with all cylinders running — to check in with private eye Marty Metakawich (Charlie Day), he invariably hits on her for a date.
“I like girls,” Honey says, making her usual quick exit. “Sure,” says Marty, forever clueless and uncomprehending.
“Yeah, his cluelessness” noted Ethan Coen in a joint interview with Tricia Cooke, his co-writer and out-lesbian wife of 30-plus years, “is part of the identity of the movie. If you’re a man in this movie, you’re going to be an idiot.”
And where does Aubrey Plaza’s cop, also a lesbian, fit in the scheme of idiot or not?
