A hard rain was falling on Midland County, Michigan, on May 19, 2020, when tens of thousands of residents were told by authorities to evacuate the area out of fear that the overwhelmed Edenville Dam would release a wall of water over them.

That fateful day, the dam collapsed, releasing a torrent of floodwater that swallowed thousands of homes in the area, ripping some off their foundations while leaving others severely damaged, and overtopping the Sanford Dam.

Miraculously, no one died. But five years on, many of those who survived that tragic event are living in a sort of limbo as they try to get state regulators to take their part of the blame for the failure of the Edenville Dam.

Last month, a Michigan judge allowed their class action lawsuit against the state to finally move forward
