In March, the Trump administration flew 238 Venezuelan migrants to CECOT, a notorious mega-prison in El Salvador, claiming that they were among the worst of the worst criminal aliens. However, reviews of government data suggest that nearly 200 of them had no criminal convictions in the U.S. Some were awaiting decisions on asylum applications. Others had lived and worked here for years.

At CECOT, inmates sleep in four-level metal bunks with no mattresses or sheets. While there, prisoners reported they were beaten and tortured several times a day, and cut off from all contact with lawyers and loved ones. The Trump administration claimed that they had no authority over prisoners renditioned to CECOT.
