South Lanarkshire’s SNP group has a new top team after Blantyre councillor Maureen Chalmers was elected to as leader following the decision of long-serving predecessor John Ross to step down from the role.
Councillor Chalmers, who had been depute leader for the past eight years, will now take the helm of the council’s opposition group – assisted by new depute Ross Clark, the Larkhall representative – and called it “an honour” to take up the post.
Hamilton South representative Councillor Ross told the Advertiser he has had “many highlights” during his time in the role, including five years as the leader of the council, and says he will be continuing to serve his constituents and aims to seek a further term on the local authority.
