A former federal prosecutor mocked one of President Donald Trump's favorite attorneys on Sunday because of the way he's handled a pair of high-profile cases.
Glenn Kirchner, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, appeared on "The Legal Breakdown" with progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen to discuss how Ed Martin, Trump's pardon attorney and leader of the Weaponization of Government task force, has handed his mortgage fraud investigation into Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
"There are all sorts of reasons we don't announce criminal investigations," Kirschner said. "But Ed 'Stop the Steal' Martin is the antithesis of the responsible prosecutor. He is nothing more than a mouthpiece, a flunky, a lap dog for Donald Trump."
Martin announced last week that he was opening an investigation into Schiff and James for allegedly committing mortgage fraud. Schiff and James have both denied wrongdoing.
Kirschner described the cases as "vindictive prosecutions."
The former prosecutor added that announcing that kind of investigation was one of Martin's biggest mistakes.
"First of all, you don't want to tip off somebody you are about to investigate because they could destroy evidence," Kirschner said. "They could tamper with witnesses. They could flee to avoid prosecution.
"Plus, you don't want to announce that you're launching a criminal probe into somebody because that person may not have done anything wrong," he added.
Kirschner suggested that there may be a higher purpose to Martin's investigations, one that is not based on law at all.
"He is taking a page out of Donald Trump's dirty playbook," Kirschner said. "Just announce the investigations and poison the well of public opinion against Adam Schiff or whoever Trump's enemy is."
