President Donald Trump’s impending meeting with Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelenskyy has some geopolitical experts fearing the worst — and the White House exploded Monday at one critic in particular who it called "deranged."

Fiona Hill, who served as Trump’s senior director for European and Russian affairs during his first term, gave a grim outlook on Trump’s ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine, telling Politico Monday that Trump had “completely ceded narrative control to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.”

The White House was quick to fire back at Hill, labeling her as “deranged” and mocking her credibility.

“(Hill is the) go-to Trump deranged ‘expert’ on Russia,” said White House spokesperson Anna Kelly, speaking with Politico. “President Trump has done more to deliver peace in seven months than Joe Biden did in four years, and he looks forward to discussing a potential peace agreement with President Zelenskyy and European leaders tomorrow.”

Trump is expected to meet today with Zelenskyy in Washington, D.C., just days after meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday in a meeting that has left some European leaders fearful that “Trump’s affinities with Russia” and “his admiration for Putin” may bode poorly for Ukraine.

Geopolitical experts have also raised alarms that Trump may accept a less-than-ideal agreement to bring about a quick end to the war, one motivated, in part, by the president’s longstanding aspiration of being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. Hill considers herself among those experts, and expanded on her fears Monday to Politico.

“It’s clear that Putin intends to take as much territory by force and kill as many Ukrainian forces and civilians as he can so that Ukraine is in an even weaker position when the time eventually comes to sit down,” Hill said.

“Then Putin might decide to ‘bank’ his territorial gains, and bog the Europeans and U.S. down in peacemaking/keeping operations in support of … Ukraine, while he applies other forms of pressure to undermine Zelenskyy and Ukraine. Imagine the chaos he can sow in an enforced Ukrainian election as part of a peace deal. He will diminish Ukraine one way or another.”
