When U.S. President Donald Trump met with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin for their summit in Anchorage, Alaska on Friday, August 15, Trump hand-delivered to Putin a letter from First Lady Melania Trump. One of the things the letter alluded to, without actually mentioning Ukraine by name, was reports of Ukrainian children being taken away by Russian forces during the Ukraine/Russia War.

The letter got a variety of reactions on social media. Some X.com users praised Melania Trump for being a "true friend of Ukraine" or her "wonderful advocacy for Ukraine." But others attacked the letter as an empty, hollow, meaningless gesture in light of how sympathetic President Trump has often been to Putin.

Never Trump conservative and former GOP strategist Tim Miller is among the critics.

In a humorous but scathing video posted by the conservative website The Bulwark late Sunday night, August 17, Miller mocked the letter as a "silly" gesture that accomplished nothing.

Miller told viewers, "We see this gambit from the first lady…. It's very strange. I would say that it was plagiarized, but it reads like — it's much more likely that it was AI slop than plagiarized…. It certainly does not read like she was copying some rhetoric from somebody else. It's all too strange for that. There's a little bit of an ESL vibe to it."

The Never Trump conservative read excerpts from the August 15 letter, which told Putin, "Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart, whether born randomly into a nation's rustic countryside or a magnificent city-center. The dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger…. In protecting the innocence of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone — you service humanity itself."

Miller mockingly said of the letter, "I do love the passive voice about who these children are that she's talking about…. Melania does not use the word Ukraine anywhere in this letter. We're forced to presume, I guess, that she's discussing the Ukrainian children…. They've been kidnapped by the Russian aggressor, and they've been murdered. But the ones who've survived, who've not been kidnapped and brought to Russia or murdered by their indiscriminate bombing of civilian targets…. Whatever danger they've been exposed to, they've been exposed to because f------ Vladimir Putin decided to invade his neighbor for no reason beyond his own megalomania and desire to reconstitute the Soviet Union."

Miller continued, "Vladimir Putin has descended the darkness around them…. Vladimir Putin is abusing them, torturing them, attacking them, trying to murder them, stealing them from their families…. Vladimir Putin is the one who was chosen to torment the children of Ukraine…. This is something that a conservative foreign policy hawk would have mocked relentlessly had it been written by Michelle Obama or Dr. Jill Biden…. A liberal would be eviscerated from putting out something this naïve."
