Former President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he intends to lead a movement aimed at eliminating mail-in ballots. In a post on his social media platform, Trump expressed his commitment to this initiative, stating, "I, AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, WILL FIGHT LIKE HELL TO BRING HONESTY AND INTEGRITY BACK TO OUR ELECTIONS."
Trump has been a vocal critic of mail-in voting, which he has labeled as "highly inaccurate." He has previously attributed his loss in the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden to mail-in ballots, despite investigations that found no evidence of widespread voter fraud.
In his post, Trump also mentioned his desire to move away from what he described as "controversial voting machines" and suggested the use of "sophisticated watermark paper" for ballots, claiming it would enhance accuracy and speed in counting votes.
During a recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump claimed they discussed the issue of mail-in voting. He recounted that Putin remarked, "There’s not a country in the world that uses it now," referring to mail-in ballots. Trump reiterated this point in an interview with Fox News, emphasizing that he believes mail-in voting undermines the integrity of elections.
Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order aimed at reforming the U.S. election system. This order mandates proof of citizenship for voters and stipulates that only mail-in ballots received by Election Day will be accepted. However, this order is currently facing challenges from several Democratic attorneys general.
While states are responsible for administering their own elections, the federal government provides grant funding that could be affected by Trump's proposed changes. Any efforts to restrict or withhold these funds are likely to encounter legal opposition.
As Trump prepares for a critical meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he continues to focus on election integrity issues, which he views as essential for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
