REISTERSTOWN, Md. (WBAL) - A dramatic and unusual animal rescue happened after a runaway horse fell into a deep, dry well in Maryland.

Around 7 a.m. Thursday, Ron Riley received a “shocking” call informing him that a horse had fallen through plywood and was stuck in a hole about 8 to 10 feet deep.

The horse had escaped from a farm miles away through a hole in the fence.

“So I rushed home and get here. There must be 15 fire trucks, all kinds of equipment, a crane is right here. Must’ve been 50 people here,” Riley said.

The Baltimore County Fire Department Special Operations Team handled the “surreal” situation.

Fire officials had to shore up the hole first to make sure it did not cave in, then the veterinarian climbed down to sedate the horse and put the crane’s sling around its body
