GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) - The roof of a Greenville church collapsed Sunday morning, just hours before services were set to begin.

The congregation still gathered, but in a different space.

Church leaders at Upstate Church Haywood said they first noticed structural damage Saturday night. By Sunday morning, the roof had collapsed and left behind significant damage.

Many described the scene at Upstate Church Haywood, the former Laurel Baptist Church, as “unbelievable.”

The building, dating back to the 1950s, holds memories for many in the community.

“It’s honestly sad,” Greenville resident, Bartholomew Johnson said. “My grandma used to take me here on Sundays. We have service in here. Very nice people. It’s sad to see this happen to the community.”
