Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy aimed to leverage fashion diplomacy during his recent visit to the White House. He hoped that a change in attire would encourage U.S. President Donald Trump to assist Ukraine in reaching a peace agreement with Russia. Despite the serious situation in Ukraine, much of the discussion among reporters focused on whether Zelenskyy would wear a suit.

In February, Zelenskyy faced criticism from a U.S. reporter for wearing military-style clothing during a visit to the Oval Office. This incident set the stage for a tense exchange when Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelenskyy for not expressing enough gratitude for U.S. support against Russia's invasion.

However, the atmosphere was markedly different during this latest meeting. Trump, 79, expressed admiration for Zelenskyy’s black jacket and collared shirt, exclaiming, "I can’t believe it, I love it!" Zelenskyy, a former comedian, humorously responded, "It’s the best I had."

Inside the Oval Office, the light-hearted banter continued. Brian Glenn, the reporter who had previously mocked Zelenskyy’s attire, complimented him, saying, "President Zelenskyy, you look fabulous in that suit!" Trump echoed the sentiment, adding, "I said the same thing."

Zelenskyy also brought a letter from his wife, Olena, thanking Melania Trump for her efforts to advocate for children’s lives in communications with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The focus on Zelenskyy’s outfit, rather than the critical peace negotiations, highlights the lengths to which foreign leaders must go to appeal to Trump.

Zelenskyy has worked diligently to gain Trump’s favor, especially given Trump’s skepticism about U.S. support for Ukraine and the financial implications of the ongoing conflict. Trump has previously expressed admiration for Putin and has echoed some of his views, including calls for Ukraine to relinquish Crimea and reconsider its NATO ambitions.

During the meeting, Zelenskyy appeared more conciliatory than in previous encounters. He even thanked Trump for a map illustrating the territory lost to Russia. European leaders accompanying Zelenskyy also aimed to bolster support for Ukraine while acknowledging Trump’s role in seeking a peace deal. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who wore a double-breasted suit, received praise from Trump for his youthful appearance.

As the meeting progressed, NATO chief Mark Rutte lightened the mood by jokingly asking Trump’s protocol chief, "Do I look OK?" while adjusting his suit jacket. This visit underscored the complex dynamics of international diplomacy, where attire and personal rapport can play significant roles.
