STATEWIDE -- Navigational buoys in the Gulf of Maine that were slated for removal by the U.S. Coast Guard will remain in place for now after a group of U.S. Senators led by Senator Angus King made the case for why they should stay.
The Coast Guard had launched an initiative in April of this year that proposed the discontinuation of 351 coastal buoys across New England, with the largest share of them being in Maine. Even more buoys were under consideration for future removal.
Senator King along with other New England senators sent a letter to the Coast Guard's Director of Marine Transportation Systems saying the public comment period on the initiative should be extended to increase engagement. The Director responded saying the process would be extended to "ensure the needs of communities
