CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - Teachers across the Heartland have welcomed students back to classrooms today, kicking off the 2025-2026 school year.

It was an exciting day at Nell Holcomb as teachers welcomed back 274 kids, kindergarten through 8th grade.

“I don’t know who is more excited, the parents or the kids, to be back here at school. Our teachers did a great job welcoming everyone in,” said Principal Mike Wortmann. ”That was wonderful seeing all the children, bright faces, especially after summer break. But our staff did a great job welcoming the children back into the doors here at Nell Holcomb.”

Principal Wortmann said he looks forward to having a great school year.
