Judd Apatow 's first time didn't happen until he was 37.

That is, the prolific producer—who now has a whole film-and-TV universe to his name—didn't direct a movie of his own until he was deep into his fourth decade. And that debut was The 40-Year-Old Virgin , starring Steve Carell (in real life a married father of two) as super-nice guy Andy, an electronics store sales clerk who respects women so much he's never drummed up the courage to go near one.

"Before this I did a TV show called Freaks and Geeks ," Apatow, now 57, told E! News when the film came out in 2005, "and I thought, 'Well, I guess this is like, what if one of the geeks never had sex and it's 20 years later, and what's he gonna do?' And it would still be really funny and sweet, and you'd root for him."
