MSNBC's Joe Scarborough highlighted a "remarkable" development from President Donald Trump's meeting with European leaders to discuss ending the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Trump said that Russia had agreed the U.S. and European countries could provide "NATO-like" security guarantees to Ukraine, which the "Morning Joe" host described as nothing short of "historic."
"Tell you what that is – that is really pretty remarkable," Scarborough said. "We were talking yesterday morning about, we said, a historic day in the White House, and then we said, well, we don't usually say that. Maybe it's an overstatement, but it was, as you said, historic.
"You had the West there, you had the West there, and Vladimir Putin heard every one of the leaders in the West say, thank you for the security guarantee. Several bringing up Article 5. ... But that Article 5, that's them poking at Putin, saying, yeah, maybe they're not NATO, but they're going to get an Article 5-type guarantee, and again, you can't overstate it."
"Those European countries being there and an American president supporting this, it's not just good news for Ukraine," he added. "This is, you know, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, who are on the front lines. You look at Poland, who's constantly concerned about Russian aggression, thinking they're next. That is a great message for all of Europe that we're talking about that, and [Ukrainian President Volodomyr] Zelenskyy even talking about the possibility of a $90 billion military package."
Co-host Willie Geist agreed, saying that Trump had sided with Europe against Russia, whose leader he has been loath to criticize.
"Yeah, I mean, that's an extraordinary moment," Geist said. "We can talk about the details and what happens today and tomorrow and whether Vladimir Putin really is listening to any of it. But to see the western world, the leadership in one room and to be flies on the wall, the public got to hear all of that, too, and listen to peace talks, effectively, the beginning of them."
