Principal photography has begun on Oscar-winning Polish filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski’s 1949, with shooting taking place in Poland, Germany and Italy, and The Match Factory handling sales.
Set at the height of the Cold War, 1949 centres on the relationship between the writer Thomas Mann, played by Hanns Zischler, and his actress, journalist and rally driver daughter Erika, played by Sandra Hüller, as they embark on a road trip in a black Buick cruiser across a Germany in ruins. Their journey takes them from US-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar.
August Diehl, Anna Madeley, Devid Striesow and Theo Trebs also star.
Producers are Mubi, Our Films’ Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli (Italy), Extreme Emotions’ Ewa Puszczynska (Poland), Nine Hours’ Jeanne Tremsal and Edward Ber
