The Virginia Military Institute Board of Visitors has appointed retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. David Furness as its 16th superintendent.
Furness, originally from Columbus, Ohio, graduated summa cum laude from VMI with a degree in history in 1987. He served in the Marine Corps for 36 years until he retired in 2023.

“I have benefited immeasurably from my VMI education and the leadership experience it afforded me,” Furness is quoted in the statement announcing his hiring. “I am indebted to the Institute for molding me into the man I am today, and it is an immense honor to give back and serve the VMI community as Superintendent.”
