MILLE LACS, Minn. — A slower bite this summer season on one of Minnesota's premier walleye lakes is allowing the DNR to bump up the fish limit to three starting this Saturday.
Beginning Aug. 23, anglers on Mille Lacs Lake will be able to keep three fish at least 17 inches long, with only one of those fish longer than 20 inches. The increase is based on numbers through July 31, which show that just 23.5% of the 113,600 pounds of walleye allocated by the state and the Ojibwe tribes have been harvested by anglers this summer.
The DNR says the low numbers are due to healthy populations of both yellow perch and cisco, which gives walleye alternatives to bait dangled by anglers.
