An Aberdeenshire soldier who has become one of the last surviving veterans from the D-Day landings is celebrating a milestone birthday.

Jim Glennie , 100, was only a teenager when he was involved in Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944 in a bid to liberate Europe from the Nazi regime.

The then 18-year-old Pte Glennie was first called up to Bridge of Don Barracks in Aberdeen , with the Turriff -born soldier saying his survival during the landings was "sheer luck."

"If you weren't fit it was hard, but if you were fit it was alright," he told the BBC previously recalling his experience.
