(CNN) - The U.S. Postal Service will honor the late President Jimmy Carter with a new stamp.

The postal service’s art director designed the new stamp.

It features an image of Carter from a 1982 painting created by Herbert Abrams.

Carter died last December at the age of 100.

The postal service is honoring Carter’s years in the White House and his achievements after he left office.

Carter was known as a prominent activist for peace, human rights, and social and economic progress around the world.

The stamp will be available beginning Oct. 1, the 101st anniversary of Carter’s birth.
