SPRINGFIELD — Nexstar Media Group, owners of WWLP Channel 22 in Springfield and the largest owner of TV stations in the country, is buying rival Tegna Inc. in a $6.2 billion deal that includes taking on the company’s debt.

Tegna’s stations in the area include the Fox affiliate WTIC and CW network station WCCT in Hartford.

Nexstar already owns the ABC and MyTV affiliates in the Hartford market, WTNH and WCTX.

Nexstar has more than 200 owned and partner stations in 116 markets. It owns The CW and NewsNation networks as well. Tegna owns 64 news stations across 51 markets.

Questions of whether the deal gives Nexstar too much control over the airwaves are now up to regulators.

But the Federal Communications Commission has signaled a loosening of restrictions.
