After a longer than usual quarterback competition between two players who have thrown a combined three passes in college football, Notre Dame has its man behind center.

The No. 6 Irish announced Tuesday that redshirt freshman CJ Carr, an elite recruit in the 2024 class, will be its first-stringer at the position in 2025. Carr's first task: Beating No. 10 Miami (Florida) on the road in the Aug. 31 season-opener.

Carr beat out redshirt sophomore Kenny Minchey, a former top 200 national recruit in his own right, after the pair spent fall camp with the race too close to call, according to Irish coaches.

As recently as Sunday, after a weekend intrasquad scrimmage, Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman had said there was not enough separation to make a decision.
